Individuals Stopping Anti-Obesity Injections Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis reveals that patients who stop using popular slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals purchasing these drugs must be cognizant of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a return to starting mass within about a year and a half.

Comparing Approaches

The study, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually have a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Quick Rebound

Doctors believe the mechanism of the drugs explains the amplified rebound.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this medication means appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Issue?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.

This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

Users who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden return of appetite.

"It felt as if something that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," described a patient.

This challenge is compounded if users have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Significant Interest

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined behavioural support.
